An esports tournament calendar is published as a list of windows, an organizer logo and a stage label for each window. The label is the part most viewers read first: open qualifier, group stage, playoffs, grand final. The label is a useful index, and the index is also where the format starts to drift.
Two organizers can publish the same label and run two different formats underneath it. A "Group Stage" run as a swiss bracket pairs teams by record across a fixed number of rounds. A "Group Stage" run as a GSL group sends a team to the lower bracket after two losses. A "Group Stage" run as a round-robin pool ranks teams by head-to-head record and tie-breakers. The label is identical. The pairings, the advancement rule and the elimination rule are different, and a viewer who has not read the format PDF will misread the first series they watch.
The cost of misreading shows up in two places. The first is the broadcast: a viewer who does not know whether the bracket is single-elimination with a reset clause or single-elimination without one will read a five-map grand final as a single-elimination trick instead of as the second match of a reset. The second is the schedule: a viewer who does not know whether the group stage advances top eight after three rounds or top two after a GSL group will read a bracket lock as either a fait accompli or a near-certainty when the format actually splits the difference.
The fix is not to memorise every format PDF. The fix is to learn the five cues that signal which format is in play, then read the organizer feed once before each stage to confirm which cue the active format uses. The five cues are below. The reader who learns them carries the format decoder with them into the next broadcast, regardless of which organizer is on screen.
